What's neat is that FSR did a good job of bringing back detail in the background, but presented a softer overall foreground. Check out this comparison between the pillar detail on the left (foreground) versus the statue (background).

Looks like a pretty big change in the lighting going on there from picture to picture to me.
 
And we KNOW Digital Foundry is often a "sponsored" content provider for NVIDIA. Just worth mentioning.
seems a few around here dont know that or dont care as they think df is the be-all-end-all for tech-tubers.

the DF guys are highly knowledgeable and detailed in their reviews on games, hardware etc...their sponsored videos are clearly labeled as 'sponsored'
 
and defend them like their feelings got hurt...

people post them as if they will end arguments, "df said it, therefor im right"

I've been testing Godfall all morning, and while the DF video is not wrong objectively, the opinion is clearly biased beyond any verifiable facts.

In my tests, I thought ultra quality FSR in Godfall actually improved the image, as Godfall is kind of a noisy/pixelated render, so it acts more like AA in this game.

I'm downloading Terminator now, but I can understand why that faired better as Unreal is softer and more post-process heavily, meaning the image is already blurred (on purpose) so you don't lose much.

But I expected more from DF in terms of the performance improvement. That is why we are all here and hyped for FSR, for the performance. Of course you give up some PQ but seems like a fair trade when we are talking double FPS in some cases.

I sort of agree with you. A performance improvement is a performance improvement, but part of the magic about the current version of DLSS is that it improves performance AND some visual detail. This is especially apparent in Cyberpunk 2077, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, and as was pointed out in another thread, Rainbow Six Siege got a new version of DLSS (2.2?) which actually improves fidelity even further. FSR seems to improve performance, but detail takes a hit in virtually all cases.

I was kind of hoping that AMD would be able to release a product that was able to at least get close to DLSS, but as it stands, even Unreal Engines Temporal AA solution seems to preserve detail better.

My guess is that it will get better overtime, but for now, it seems like just softening of the image, which is sort of what we expected.
 
I am not trying it out right now, due to the games supported at launch, however 30% boost for sort of nothing, and up to 50% with minor issues in 4k is a win from my perspective.

Let's hope game support expands reasonably soon.

it did take DLSS multiple revisions to get things to where they are now...DLSS 1.0 was a blurry mess as well...DLSS 2.0 is when things took a dramatic upturn...
 
Guys guys, calm down a bit, we will all buy new amd rx 7000 or nvidia rtx 4000 when they come out next year and everyone will forget about dlss, fidelity fx and more.
Amd will not create a new gtx 1080ti from poor type cards (such as amd rx 560,570) as well as from nvidia gtx 1050ti,1650super or gtx1660 super, don't be naive.
 
No, FSR is not a blurry mess at all, and it's way better than DLSS was at launch.

On ultra quality, you would be hard pressed to find a difference if you weren't taking screenshots and enlarging them. In perception they are equivalent. And quality mode is just a minor PQ hit for substantial performance boost (about 50% better).

The balanced and performance modes are not great in terms of image quality, but that is the same on Nvidia DLSS, and they are only there to give people with slower GPUs options, which is only a good thing.

I personally wouldn't make that sacrifice, but if you have say a GTX 1060 that may be a worthwhile trade if the other option is just not playing the game at all.

Is Godfall using RT global illumination? If so, could be partially due to the spinning cube's shiny bezel reflecting light rays around the room in the native shot, where the black opaque surface of the cube is facing the camera in the Ultra Quality FSR shot? The Quality FSR shot has the cube's bezel catching a bit more light though, and it doesn't seem much brighter than the Ultra Quality shot, but how the cube is lit there doesn't exactly match native either.
 
I didn't use RT for the test, but I didn't notice any difference in lighting when I was testing it. Probably just down to smoke and other effects (as well as the light reflection off the cube) being different even if I didn't move the camera.

I'm don't see CP2077 and Metro Exodus as a fair representation since those games have had nvidia tech baked into their games from the start as it were. Rainbow6 runs well on 5 year old cards already at 1080p-1440p. I guess maybe dlss would help boost frames in 4k on older cards.
 
Just got done playing around with FSR in The Riftbreaker: Prologue and overall it's really good. I was very skeptical about how FSR would look and perform across a range of different GPU architectures from both venders but on my 3090 I was happy with how it looked and even in Ultra Quality mode it gave me a nice performance boost.

I'm using a 4K/120Hz monitor and with the game fully maxed out with RT enabled I found a spot where I was getting around 90 FPS. Setting FSR to Ultra Quality got me to 120 FPS with about 8-9% GPU utilization to spare. There was a noticeable loss is image quality but not too terrible. Definitely better than DLSS 1.0 that's for sure. For fun I tried Quality mode and it wasn't terrible either but a step down from Ultra Quality. I wouldn't drop lower than Quality mode unless you really have to.
 
So this can still be used for 1080p display owners who enjoy FSR ing to 2160p and then can use FidelityFX to get our Frame rates back to normal fps :) or Maybe time to buy a 4k display now?
 
I actually thought about that. It would depend on if VSR is compatible with FSR. Seems like a strange idea, but a lot of people at 1080p still.
 
Watched the reviews. It’s impressive if not fully baked just yet. If devs get onboard, especially since just about any potato can utilize this, this is a big deal.

The initial reviews look very positive for FSR, except for DF which they lost a lot of credibility with me due to how much time they spent with Control, bragging and showing everything good except the real issues (Crawling edges, texture swimming, shimmering, pop in of textures etc.) making DLSS unusable for me at 1440p. Look forward to actually testing out this new tech and not having to worry about what hardware I have to use it on is a rather big bonus.

They were showing video side-by-side and saying how much worse it looked. But I was looking at the video and it looked fine. Like what he was saying had nothing to do with what was on screen.

I expected to see deep frametime graphs and performance comparisons. They only showed performance for one game (not even the good one) and like for 20 seconds out of the video. Complete fail (or I guess success, if you're getting paid by Nvidia).

Pretty much what I concluded.
 
I can see a difference, I don't have a problem with said difference however. If I need more fps (whether dls or fsr) then I won't be afraid to use it. (I haven't needed it thus far since I play at 2560x1440 and use an rtx 3080, I'm not a twitch shooter at this point in my life, either)
 
Yeah, as much as I love FSR so far, of course there is some difference. There is some difference with DLSS as well, or older technologies like the original FidelityFX CAS filter.

But if you trade a small (maybe unnoticeable) drop in picture quality for a large and measurable framerate boost, then that is a good deal.
 
Surprisingly, FSR is working in Linux no problem!!!

I only tried Terminator, gotta get some things setup so I can do a video, but the results were promising.

Although performance (in native) was a good deal worse than Windows, I found the FSR scaling to be about the same.

In Terminator on native I got around 80 fps, with FSR ultra up to 110, and then scaling to 200 with performance mode. So very nice.

And overall Terminator looked better than Godfall in terms of the lesser modes being playable, though there were artifacts on fences and bars.

Let me try to get a HUD working, cause I saved some screenshots but without the FPS counter it is hard to tell what is what. Will report back soon.

I am playing Terminator Resistance at 3440x1440 all settings maxed. I realized I needed to run in borderless window, so performance is now closer to Windows (only about 10% worse).

Honestly, things are looking good in this game. Big performance gains and I'd still say it was playable down to balanced mode.

Performance mode had a huge 2x boost, but there was aliasing around the wires, and an overall soft/blurry look that would not be acceptable (like old Xbox360 game).

Just got a performance bump on my ancient gtx 960 at 4k on my htpc - played riftbreaker demo with super res "quality" at a STEADY 33 FPS ( STOCK 4k RUNS AT 22)

could not tell the difference when running quality on 65" tv at 2 feet

Thinking that if SweettFX could add a generic insertion, I could max out horizon zero dawn targeting 1080p.

Excited about this on my two HTPCs. RX580 and 3400G. Mostly use them to watch game tournaments in-game so the extra bit of FPS boost will be great to get them watchable at 4k.

Rant* I hate it when games perform differently from full screen to borderless window. Normally full screen is better, but it's still annoying.... Off topic rant over...
 
Well traditionally full screen would give you a little extra performance, but newer games seem to run just as good in borderless and have less issues.
