Forgive me Father, for I have sinned...

I will be interested to read your views on the 6800Xt compared to the 2080Ti. I know Ray Tracing and DLSS aren't a big thing for most people, but, not sure I could give them both up now. Especially with the improvements in DLSS 2.2. I know the 6800XT has Ray Tracing but is it even as good as the 2080Ti apart from Godfall. Nvidia still are better in VR too, which is also important for me.
Yes, I will be giving up some ray tracing performance, unless AMD comes in with the clutch with FSR. In any case, most of the time I'd prefer high refresh (160Hz monitor) and ray tracing is like at 60 fps even with DLSS on the 2080 Ti.

Time is s worth money. And for some people investing time like that doesn’t make sense especially financially. If I could I would, and the me a decade ago would. But now if it’s not readily available, it’s not for me. Which is probably why I’ll continue to follow hardware and still build, but I probably will not game for the foreseeable future.
However you want to justify paying a scalper is fine.

For me, refreshing a website several times while I did other things was not particularly onerous

Why...? (n) I could maybe understand if you didn't have a decent card already, but you have a 2080 ti which is still a fine card. From experience, the difference in performance isn't worth that amount of money, even taking into account selling the old card and disregarding the fact that your paying a scalper. You're looking at going from high to highest settings in most games.

I understand the allure of new hardware, but my God man, it's not worth that amount of hard-earned cash or weight on your conscience.

I've been thinking of doing the same. I have a 2080 Ti that's been selling for around $1400 on ebay. A scalped 3080 Ti can be had for $2000 which means I'm only paying an upgrade fee of $600. When the 3xxx series becomes widely available, we all know the 2080 Ti value is going to tank. So am I really losing any money by doing it this way?

And I know... That's not the point. We don't feed the scalpers. That's why I'm going to continue holding strong for now.

The math worked out for me. I can spend a few hundred, maybe $500 tops, depending on what I get for my 2080 Ti. And I can enjoy a new GPU now, not in 6 months or a year or we don't even know if this will end.

Yes! we all despise scalpers. Yes! we all despise companies that have no ethics and take advantage of a shitty situation aaaand yes! we all want them to boil in oil an excruciatingly slow inch at a time.
BUT...
If it really bothers those of you that are trying to make cybereality feel bad for buying a new gpu im almost certain between the whole of this forum SOMEONE could come up with a viable solution for our forum members to get cards that doesn't involve scalpers or douchebag manufacturers/companies.
With all of the combined experience and mental capacity available to the forum we should be dominating this fucking shortage not bitching and moaning about it!

Sorry end of rant.

Absolutely. I’m glad you got something and can enjoy it for sure. My original response was just my personal stance on the situation at large. I’m all about people spending money however they feel like.

Manx you’ll be playing games months before I will be again. I was dumb enough to sell my 2080Super 2 months before Ampere release. Well I lost out on this round.

Yeah, for real. I was thinking about that.

Setting up our own "Robin Hood" botnet, buying all the stock, and then selling for MSRP to members here on the forum (like that have a certain amount of posts, been here for several years, etc.).

But I guess some people would say that was unethical as well, you can't really win in this situation.

It's all about the timing with these things. On the last crypto boom, I sold my cards right at the height.

Had two RX 480s that I bought for $220 each. Used them in Crossfire for a year, then sold for over $300 each. So I basically got paid $200 to enjoy the cards for a year. Also managed to sell my Titan X Pascal for $1,200, the same as what I paid. So I just used it for about a year or so for free.

But I've also lost money, had some Vega 64s that nobody wanted so I sold for cheap. Plus, I got screwed with a return on six GTX 1070s I bought for a mining rig when I changed my mind. Back when you could just login on Newegg and buy 6 brand new GPUs at MSRP.

Well I was going to build a rig, but I already had a 6x GTX 1060 rig and I realized it was overkill. So I tried to cancel the 1070 order and it was too late. Had to pay a steep restocking fee. I think I lost like $400. Then crypto blew up and those cards were worth gold. If I had just kept them for like 1 month I would have made a ton. Oh well.

Just coming out of the lurker status to say sup. :-D

No, I definitely don't "need" the upgrade. Was going to wait til next year and do a full rebuild, but I recently switched to Linux and AMD has better support.

I mean, I for sure could have waited, but it's my hobby and, even without the extra performance, I would prefer to support AMD and what they are doing on Linux.

Yes, the scalping sucks, but that is just the situation whether I like it or not. I don't see things getting much better until into 2022, it's not like things will be normal any time soon. So yeah.

You are‘t really supporting AMD by buying a card from a scalper. The card was already purchased by said scalper. Beyond that both AMD and nVidia are selling every GPU they make. Support is a moot point in this market.

Personally for me half the fun of buying a new GPU is buying it early and engaging in discussions on game performance, heat, overclocking and power consumption. To me the thrill of having a new GPU would be quite dampened if it cost 2x MSRP for a card half way through its product cycle.

I don't blame you one bit. I got my 3080 evga FTW3 ultra hybrid for $779 in December but even then I was already thinking of buying a scalped one if I missed it. It's just business and a matter of time; I didn't want to go another 6 to 12 months to play with dlss and RT along with new games period. I was still on GTX 970 sli.

What you said. To me, not a rant but a call to arms.

Couldn't take it. I bought a GPU off a scalper. The XFX Speedster MERC319 6800XT.

Cost me $1,500 but I should be able to sell my 2080 Ti for a decent price, so it won't be too bad.

No, I don't feel great about it, but I had a little extra money this month and decided to treat myself.
Ah!....thank you?
I guess that is all I can say, since you already paid a scalper.
Well it means there is one less guy looking for a GPU anyway.

Here in Canada all the AMD Vendor cards are double MSRP compared to what they sell for on AMD.com. Newegg.ca has a bunch in stock marked up a bit from even that price that aren't selling so I imagine they will have to drop the prices soon.

The speedster is a nice looking card, not sure I would pay double for it but I understand not wanting to wait any longer.

So the card came today. I haven't installed it cause I realized I measured wrong and it won't fit in my case (1 inch too big).

Since I already blew $1,500 on the GPU, and with the prospect of getting a new case and rebuilding everything, I decided to just make a new PC.

Gonna reuse as much as I can from my current build, and sell the rest, thankfully the other parts were mostly at MSRP so it really wasn't too bad.

Really stoked to have an all AMD build as my main machine (and I will be ditching Windows and going all Linux as well).

Should have everything either Wednesday or Thursday, I will report back with my findings.

So what programs do you run? Are they all available on some Linux distro?

Suggest that you don't nuke Windows right away.

Been all team red components for awhile now and it's been challenging at times to maximize effective clocks and stabilize my system. Think I finally got my curve optimization dialed in and this thing friggin flies through everything I do. Yes it cost me some coin but judge not as the good book says.

I’m pretty sure he’s just flying by the seat of his pants making random poor decisions and paying way too much money to make them.
Yeah, basically this. But I have been dual booting Win 10 and Ubuntu for about 3 years, so I have a good idea what I'm in for.

I realize not everything works, but my main programs do, and I'd prefer to find a way to make it work rather than give up for the easy route.

I was being sarcastic, again. I went with a beautiful Linux OS until I couldn’t get a game to work with my 3900x. If it wasn’t for gaming I’d be there with you.

Gaming, Ms office, Photoshop, 3ds max/maya, and many other tools major and minor don't work on Linux natively. It also lacks anti-virus which helps secure your system even if you practice safe browsing. Linux on the desktop for most people is laughable.

Yeah, I know you were sarcastic, but there is a grain of truth in every joke (or it wouldn't be funny).

I might try to look into GPU passthrough as an option. Otherwise, I have another computer with Windows (not a powerhouse, but good enough for 1080p if a game really can't work on Linux).

im trying to sell an old PC for a friend and noticed in the last week GPU prices seem to be dropping.

Dropping from obscene to just crazy. They won't touch those mythical MSRP prices anytime soon.

dont feel to obad i waited and waited and fought a uphill battle with bestbuys faulty site and bs bot protection for months. i bought a 3090FE cost me $4000 Cad, what drove me to do it was best buys ordering system, the 3090FE was a online only item by time i had chance to get one. tried over and over the cart would crash the site wouldnt load, or the real kicker. the website stating this "online only" item isnt available for online ordering, so i bit the bullet and paid what i had to complete the system,

but i made the money back within 2 months of freelance work with some side projects and sold a gaming system afterwards for $2200.

I concur with the last statement in this quote, for * most * people. I know a guy who does litigation support around software infringement lawsuits, and he has all the tools he needs on Linux. But he also dual-boots with Windows.

I'm a big Lightroom and Photoshop user. There are some Linux alternatives to Photoshop, but they all come with issues relative to Photoshop itself.

I'm not going to cut off my nose and lips just so I can get away from Windows any more than I'm not going to get an all-electric car to replace my hybrid just to stick it to Big Oil.

So some of the parts arrived today for the new build. I think the PC Gods have blessed me, look at this!
