Ubuntu Linux Evaluating x86-64-v3 Based Build - AVX & Newer Intel/AMD CPUs

Nothing more to add except hearing "RISC is the future" in a CPU Architecture course I took in grad school ... in 1991.

    Hot 5800X3D $279.99 Microcenter

For what I cared about, Haswell wasn't going to do squat coming from a 3570K capable of 4.9G all core. I was doubt full about anything Intel given what I know about TANE. Figured a change of architecture may make a difference and tried a 5800X and mobo from MC figuring that if I didn't get...

    Hot 5800X3D $279.99 Microcenter

https://www.microcenter.com/product/647926/amd-ryzen-7-5800x3d-vermeer-34ghz-8-core-am4-boxed-processor-cooler-not-included Haven't upgraded in quite a while, coming from a 4.9GHz Ivy, but damn! 5800X3D is a very nice upgrade. The 5800X is also a decent upgrade, but I returned it and got the...

[Mostly Dead] EVGA B-Stock strikes again

Oh I'm not. I'm running them in SLI which means they are about 3080TI/3090 performance level. Even managed to undervolt them just a bit to save some power while still boosting to 1800. What I'm doing is not mainstream, but it works for me and I don't care one iota about RT. These were...

[Mostly Dead] EVGA B-Stock strikes again

I've got two long term b-stock EVGA cards, a GTX 980 (2016) and a GTX 1070 TI (2019). Both still work fine. I got the 1070 TI for a steal, because it was given to me in exchange for a 980 TI b-stock that went bad during the first 30 days that I paid $199 for. 1070 TIs at the time were going...

Need some help diagnosing an issue

Put a voltmeter on the 12V supply when this happens. If the 12V goes out even a bit and comes back on, the power supply tripped. Technically if the power supply trips, it should stay off, but some mother boards will tickle the P_ON of the supply and turn it back on and make it look like a...

Is a used GT 710 from eBay a bad idea? Just need a cheap GPU to perform data recovery on a system whose iGPU is not working.

That is just sad. Before the recent craziness, GT710s were offered on EVGA B-stock for $15 shipped on some Wednesdays. Modern integrated graphics probably output performs the genuine cards even for HTPC. Perhaps the scammers are short on fake cards as well in this market. One dead giveaway...

Is a used GT 710 from eBay a bad idea? Just need a cheap GPU to perform data recovery on a system whose iGPU is not working.

The generic drivers in windows will work with these cards, so as a utility card to just get a display to service a PC, the GT710/720/730 are fine. They also work well with real Nvidia drivers. I have several ebay sourced $20-$30 GT720s that I use for MythTV frontends. The GT710/720 are great...

Anybody here still have a Abit board?

My IP35 was my last and least favorite Abit board - I didn't care for that double boot stuff either although the Gigabyte EP45-UD3P that replaced it kind of did the same thing. IIRC, that was a new thing with Conroe. I've certainly had worse boards. That said, I really miss Abit. Had some...

    Fry's Electronics permanently closing Feb 24, 2021

I had nearly the same thing happen with my fridge. Only difference is the con worked because even with the warranty, they beat everybody else out on price. I recall thinking how can this business make money this way -- a few years later they were gone. A funnier story is I bought a display...

    Fry's Electronics permanently closing Feb 24, 2021

FIFY. (sorry, couldn't resist) The first time I went into a Fry's there was a big banner "Welcome Technical Professionals". When I announced to the team I currently work for that Fry's bit the dust, my boss, a leader of over a dozen technical professionals and sharp engineer in his own right...

    Nvidia 1070 ti

Ha! Obviously I didn't read through the thread. Here is to the bottoming out of the current crypto boom with a hard landing - makes for a great buyer's market for video cards.

    Nvidia 1070 ti

Just curious what you base this on. Asking because when I was just replying I was preparing to say 1070TI's were going for $500, because when I looked last week, that seemed to be representative of the closing prices on Evilbay. However, when I double checked, I found decent cards from decent...

    Nvidia 1070 ti

Holy smokes, you ain't kidding. I have a lonely 980 for a racing sim and was thinking of picking up a second, I mean, how much can a 980 non-TI go for? The answer appears to be nearly $200 (I was anticipating less than $100) . 1070TI's are going for stupid money (casual look at Evilbay...
