I've had this thing for a while and the manual is gone... but before I go hunting for what it won't tell me; is this behavior an indication that it's basically end-of-life? If so - what is a good replacement - something fairly easy for a duffer to use / has good software? Recommendations?

Look at STALKER2 - the buildings look almost the same; like they're sharing elements from one studio to the other.

I ran it fine with a 970. It's not the spec so much as the waiting and desync - neither of which any hardware you can buy will fix. You want at least 16gb RAM. Otherwise; it's playable on low spec machines b/c Russian. Higher spec handles the graphics better... but again, its not the graphics...
