What exactly is the deal with GPUs

I was at the perinatologist with my wife for her 20-week exam. Discord notifications on my phone were too delayed to get in the Best Buy queues fast enough to snag anything.
I saw them all pop up simultaneously and it's overwhelming, 20 different models all at once so which one do you attempt to grab? And then they come in and out of stock every 5-10 minutes over the course of 2+ hours. So you're constantly clicking around, refreshing, queueing, and getting nothing. You're tempted to go for the FE's first but that's what everybody else is doing, too.

Best Buy really needs to adopt Newegg's shuffle system.

In the meantime I'm going to write some more comprehensive scripts to refresh and queue for all of these cards on the next restock. Doing it manually is just too inefficient.

No thanks. All that does is favor the spammers with 100's of email-addresses. I've gotten 0 wins of Newegg raffle to date from two accounts.

At least with BB I can get 1-2 cards every drop. Then I can trade those for the GPU's I *really* want.

how are you getting cards from BB? I clicked add to cart, then waited in their system for the please wait to turn yellow to add to cart. It turned yellow after like 20 minutes, but I wasn't able to add to cart. I did this about 10 times.

Basic BB tactics:
1. Open your selected browser and log-in to BB. Have Address/CC information already populated with defaults selected. Have search queries ready to go.
2. Watch a live stock stream / discord. The *second* you see/hear the pings, start refreshing your BB search queries.
3. Anything that is not out of stock, open a *new* window and immediate hit the queue button. Rinse and repeat.
4. At this point you should have at least 5+ queues open on various windows. I have upwards of 10 sometimes. Resize the windows, the only thing you need to see is the button turning yellow.
5. When any of them change to yellow/'Add to Cart', immediately begin the checkout process, don't worry what you're clicking, just next next next. Example, I've had 1 card shipped, 1 card pick up. One time I had a pickup location 25 miles away. Who cares.
6. Auto refresh your queries (their are browser plug-ins) on a 1-2 min timer. Usually the drops last 10-15 min. So keep checking back.

If you ATC and don't hit checkout, just close the Window; no point wasting time. It means it's sold out.
If you ATC and can't select a nearby location, try increasing your radius. If it still denies you, just remove from cart and move on. I usually have this happen 1-2 times per drop. One time I increased radius for a MSI Ventus 2x 3060. Thought about it for 5s and figured a 200 mile round trip wasn't worth it; this depends on what you think your time is worth. If it was a 3080, I would've done it without hesitation.

If you want to know the BB online order flow, just order something really small to practice the checkout pages.
I recommend not going for 3080's, because of the demand. 3060 (non-Ti) are the most plentiful.
I recommend using multi-monitor setup. Basically you're playing whack a mole.

I actually love doing this. Lots of suspense and great chance to practice APM skills.

thanks. whats the deal with the BB shipping? I noticed yesterday it said shipping wasn't available to me, and wanted me to do a pickup. I noticed it on the product page when it was in stock. I didn't get far enough to see what the issue was.

also, zotac store has been having drops last couple hours. they had the 3070, and then the 3080. I was able to add to cart but not checkout. the website crashes and you have to keep trying. make sure you have an account and logged in. they dont let you checkout without logging in. and update your shipping info on your account before hand.

BB is only shipping cards to stores for pick-up. I've seen some people claim they got home shipping on their orders, assume it's a bug. But you don't have time to be picky at checkout. Just leave it on store shipping and spam through checkout.

BB used to reserve your card for about 10 minutes once you reach the Checkout page, so you can take your time. Have seen some people yesterday say they lost their cards within seconds of reaching that page, so they may have ended that policy.

Yeah it depends, sometimes they can ship cards too but usually it's just ship to store where it can be "in stock" but not for any stores near you. My 3090 I picked up but the 3070 I got for my friend I had shipped.

Best Buy tries to be 'fair' to its core customer base. The following is my speculation based on rumors and behavior: So lets say they have 1000 3060Ti FE's. They are divided regionally based on approximate demand. It may very well be in stock, but since you're not of the appropriate region, it won't let you pick up. A notorious example for the last BB drop (2021-04-02) was an EVGA 3060Ti FTW. It remained in stock for 1-2 hours due to regional constraints.

I have no clue about shipping. I've only had one item that allowed shipping, a MSI 3070 Ventus 3X about a month ago. TBH, I didn't even know I asked for shipping, I just clicked next next next yes please give me card.

how long does it take for the button to change to yellow?

I would say under 5 min... definitely under 10 min. If it takes longer, it'll probably time out and fail.
thanks. another 3080 drop at the zotac store a bit ago. I may have gotten one if I didn't delete it from my cart from earlier today.

I think the deal is, "Just how badly do you want a new GPU?" If you really do have to have one right now, then you'll follow all the approaches that people talk about in these threads for getting one off a web site, or at a MC, etc. Or maybe pay a scalper's price on EvilBay. Otherwise, you'll just grin and bear it, until such time as the shortages disappear.

They do it nearly every day. I've entered all of them since January, selecting almost every GPU/Combo, won nothing.
So far, Newegg doesn't even carry the card(s) I would buy. Which I would buy only at a "reasonable" price of course.

Have to say that I'm "less enchanted" with NE these days. Not "disenchanted," but it's no longer my one-and-only store for tech.

I still do appreciate NE for allowing me to break free from "Frys' Electronics." That was a great store, once, then it went downhill until it finally shut down recently, no loss at all.

when do you typically get the email?
When I have gotten told yes, it is generally in a couple hours of the 5pm deadline. I have gotten rejections up to 12 hours later.

thanks. looking like I missed out. entry email says I'll get an email by 2am.

Agree. Newegg shuffle was probably a realistic option early on. Now there are too many people entering with too few cards to go around. Probably better off just getting a lottery ticket at the 7-11.
I have hit it two out of four tries.
5x in a row, nothing. You know what they say about how some people just have all the luck... You may be living a charmed life lol

 Can't help to notice all the shenanigans involved in attempting to get a GPU.. That's just entirely too much energy and time to get your hands on an overpriced, retailed scalped GPU. Go outside and get some fresh air. Cut the grass that you have neglected from last weekend. Go grab a nice steak and throw it on the grill....

You guys are just as bad as a crack addict trying to scrounge up a few bucks to get their last rock..

Don't get me wrong.. I love gaming.. but I believe for 99% of us... at least I hope... are not spending this much energy on this and will use their current GPU and ride out the storm. You guys are caving to the manufacturers and retailers; you guys are showing them what they can get away with.. you guys are setting future pricing...

Agreed with Benedict. Its a great time to develop new hobbies or revisit old ones. Or play any of the dozens of older games you haven't gotten around to. **** the new GPUs, FOMO, and the scalpers who prey upon that.

I can permanently delete your accounts, just give me the word.

the problem is my other hobby is motorcycles ! and been looking for a
fair price on several over past 6 months , but guess what ? A shortage and
over priced being charged... so, might have to take up mowing grass or something
as a new hobby ... :)

oh boy , hope my 1070ti (pc in general) can hold out for another year..

well I think its kind of a game to get a gpu at this point, and people I guess like playing it. entering the newegg shuffle took about a minute. so not sure how thats too much energy. I will say I spent like 90 minutes during the last best buy drop, that was a little crazy. those drops happen once every 2 weeks i think so I mean thats plenty of time to mow the grass haha.

I dunno, this whole thing has kind of helped me reprioritize my life. Instead of slaving away at work I can build computers all day and build up passive income while still collecting a paycheck. Took up investing as well and FOMO'd those gains into more mining rigs. If it all comes crashing down at least I had a fun time of it.

I tried the discord/youtube notifications thing for about a day though. That was stressful and frustrating because even clicking immediately wouldn't beat the bots. Tried bots as well, also didn't work. But visiting microcenter once a week, picking up random supplies, and chancing upon a GPU every now and then is much nicer.

Which bots?

Agreed.

newegg shuffle happening now
I just check it on my phone. It doesn't show one.

It would help if people would give a date and time when they proclaim that there is going to be a shuffle.

I missed it as well I was checking all before lunch and nothing. Then went out to do yard work and it’s done very quick window.
