Carl Pei was one of the founders of OnePlus, alongside Pete Lau, and helped turn the company from a little-known "startup" (read: division of OPPO) into one of the most popular Android smartphone brands worldwide. However, Pei has seemingly now left his role at the company after nearly seven years.

Sources say Pei has left
Android Central is reporting from two sources that Pei left the company "in recent weeks" though OnePlus still has yet to make official statements to any specific publication or in its own media.

New venture
TechCrunch now reports that Carl Pei is leaving OnePlus to start "his own venture," citing a source familiar with the matter. No further details are known at this time, and OnePlus has still not made any official announcements about Pei's departure.

Personally I think OnePlus has strayed way too far away from their original idea. They were the flagship killer selling smartphones for half the price of current flagships from the big names, and ran a stock like Android OS and UI, with some nice additional extra tweaks and options over vanilla.

Now, WTF they are charging $900+ for their OnePlus 8 Pro :(
They use that sh!tty curved edge display garbage that Samsung puts on their Galaxy line. Go back to a flat screen like the iPhone 12 Pro
Their stock vanilla like OS has changed a lot lately, away from AOSP stock type, and more like Samsung's One UI.
And they used to put pretty big batteries inside their phones, much large than the competition for the year, but now a days they just put standard sized batteries, if they kept up what they were doing, the OnePlus 8 Pro should have a 5,000mAh battery minimum.
Updates? Not the best track record, for phones that really aren't that old, OnePlus is getting a bad rap for not keeping phones that are only a couple years old on the current latest Android and monthly security update.
Camera? Have they ever put out a great camera? I mean its good, not great #1.

My Pixel 4XL has the dreaded battery question mark issue. https://ifixelectronics.com.au/pixel-4-xl-design-flaw-explained/

So instead of having it repaired under warranty I'm JUMPing to OnePlus 8T+ 5G. It's only $750 for a 6.55 screen, 120Hz, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage , IP-68 rated and the Snapdragon 865. Oh and a 4500mAh battery. That absolutely blows away the Pixel 5 and my current Pixel 4XL. It's only $50 more than Pixel 5 and it's saving me $18/mo since it's so much cheaper than Pixel 4XL was for a lot more phone. Don't know about you but I think that's right where OnePlus should be.

I can't say much about the new version of OxygenOS but I've started to find that the newer versions of Android have basically made the UI a non-issue for me at least. It's all just icons and minor shit to me now. On the 6T OxygenOS wasn't fully stock and it didn't bother me at all. It wasn't a bloated UI like some Samsung garbage of the past.

In terms of their updates they seem to be just about every other month (I saw this with my 6T) and sites that track stuff say the same. It would be nice if they could move to hitting those monthly milestones though. So while I'll miss the monthly updates of the Pixel I'm not too concerned about it. This isn't the same as in the past where you'd be lucky to get a patch in 6 months or later. OnePlus 6T is patched up to September already and is slotted to get Android 11 still. I find that's pretty good support. I don't ask for more than 3 years of that from a vendor in this fast moving cutthroat mobile industry.

Exactly. They made a name for themselves because they weren't charging top rates for phones...and now they are.

Hopefully Carl Pei's new venture is more successful than say the "Essential Phone" project of Andy Rubin (even though I liked my Essential Phone when I had it).

Forreal, I definitely think they're too far gone from the original premise. I've owned a 3 and a 7T, I like both.

BUT PLEASE STOP MAKING THEM BIGGER AND MORE EXPENSIVE. Holy fuck phones are big enough. There's no way I'd want anything bigger, my 7T is already on the verge of being annoying to have in a side pocket, and it's to the point where it feels awkward to strap the thing to my arm for exercise.

So true. Glad I got my 5T before they went nuts.

They had a great market for high quality minimal frills "what people need / want" at a fair price. 550 dollars for the top end 5T and its still working just as well as it did on the first day.
I'm fine if they want to branch out and do more fancy things at a higher cost. But don't shaft your primary customer base who made it possible for you to go that route :(

I don't mind paying for value but current prices have little value in reality compared to the older generations. Sure the camera options are nice and I'll pay a bit more for some of that but do I really need 5 cameras? No.

So got my OnePlus 8T+ 5G today. Holy crap what a phone for the price.

It's gorgeous. The screen is beyond gorgeous. It's super fast and oh so smooth. The Camera IMO is actually quite impressive. The Nightscape is easily just as good as Nightsight on my old Pixel 4XL. Battery life so far has been stellar and it was used heavily today with having to migrate from the Pixel.

Very little bloat overall and a vast majority of the bloat can be uninstalled. Anything that can't can be disbaled.

The UI honestly isn't much different then what I had with the 6T. It's still pretty stockish and the Samsung like icons isn't a huge deal for me because I don't use any of those apps.

The one really impressive thing though is charging. While I'm not a fan of proprietary solutions I have to say Dash Charge is f'n amazing. It's really stupid fast. Far faster than any other phone I've ever owned.

Overall so far I'm quite happy with my choice to move from my dying Pixel to the 8T+ 5G.

I'm wanting a Nord 2 released here that has a good camera for $400. That pixel 4a is pretty damn tempting to replace my oneplus 6

That's great to hear. Does the screen get bright? And it has 120hz?
It's far brighter than the Pixel was. Right now I have it at about 50% and it's about where my Pixel would be brightness wise at 70-75%.

And yes 120hz screen.

8T looks solid, but rather grab it for haft off when the next phone comes out. My wife got her 7 Pro from Tmo for 450$ 8GB and 256GB model
