Any info on new AMD chipset motherboards? X670?

Look in the manual if it needs a CPU to use that button. If it has it, I doubt it - but you never know.

And there you go :)

I never realized what an important feature that was until now...it's nice that MSI included it on a $220 board...would have been a PITA to have to pick up an older CPU just to flash the BIOS

Not much if anything. Might remove that jet engine of a chipset fan that runs 100% of the time.
Wait, since when did the cost fans run 100% of the time? Every other comment on them was they spin up on boot, then stop and you never hear from them again.

While we haven't been hearing anything at all about a new chipset, it seems there are at least some manufacturers updating older boards with newer features. Asus is even updating some B450 motherboards with newer features and better VRMs. I was reading about that earlier as I think one of them being updated is the motherboard I have. It's mostly USB changes, VRM changes as well as networking but at least one of the B450 boards will have the BIOS flashback which shouldn't need a CPU to update the BIOS.

It's likely we'll see a lot more of these boards, especially x570 boards on launch day if a new chipset hasn't been out long enough for them to build and quality boards with it. I don't particularly see a problem with this and it should mean that most issues which crop up with new boards/chipsets should be absent while still having newer or updated accessories on the boards.

I think it unlikely that a fully new chipset would be bringing much if anything new to the table.

Yeah, that is probably what I'm going to do. Intel is technically still faster than Zen 2, but it's fairly negligible and I would really rather go for forward-facing features like PCI-E 4.0. Even if Zen 3 is marginally faster than Zen 2, it's still going to be pretty close to par with the fastest Intel offerings, so it seems like a relatively safe bet.

Faster single threaded, slower overall.

I did a little research and my new MSI X570 Tomahawk board has that Flash BIOS button so everything looks good...it's been so long since I built a full system that I always assumed that even with an older BIOS the system would still be able to boot to the BIOS...

Several years ago, you could get a system to POST with an unsupported CPU. However, that only ever worked when the newer CPU was very similar to the older ones. Microcode was far less complex back in the day, and it wasn't as big a deal. BTW, this is really back in the days where you had to set CPU voltages by jumpers on the motherboard. After that, it became less common to be able to do something like that. In the last 15+ years, that hasn't worked due to the increasing complexity of CPU's and due to things like integrated voltage regulators, integrated memory controllers and the like.

So I'm guessing since there was no mention of X670 then we won't be seeing it for Zen 3?

It is most likely for the best, and they can put the chipset engineering into the new ryzen platform. Then the new ryzen can start off with a much better platform, compared to how rough 1st gen ryzen had it with memory issues and poor quality VRMs.

What else does X570 need that it doesn't have? It already has PCIe 4.0 long before Intel, for example.

Nothing I can think of. DDR5 when it comes will be pricey and twitchy till we learn the foibles anyway, and brand new platforms are always touchy for the same reasons. I'm seriously considering building an X570 as a mixed-use server/linux box here soon myself, even with a Zen2 TR system in the house.

I just put the first set of DDR4 I ever bought into a new machine for my mother-in-law. It was a G.SKILL 4x4GB 2666MHz CL15 set that cost me $299. Unfortunately I could only get 2400MHz stable with a Ryzen 3 3200G on a B450. I'm not relishing the change to DDR5 which will likely be as (if not more) painful to the wallet!
