Shuttle Support

Anyone ever use Shuttle support before? I e-mailed them a question about an old box I have and they never got back to me. Just wondering if that's normal or not.

Basically my Shuttle SH61R4 won't update the bios. It says that the bios is write-protected, but there is no way to disable the write protection either through a jumper on board or a bios setting (from what I can see anyway). I e-mailed them about a week ago asking them about it, and never heard anything.
 
I contaced them several times over the past years for my SX79R5 and they responded very quickly. Also the answers were very helpful. Thats all I could say about the german support. :)
 
In the BIOS under the Boot tab there is an option for BIOS Write Protect. Check that has been disabled first.

That's the thing. That is not present in my bios version. It just goes right to boot option priorities.
 
Well, I never heard back from Shuttle, so I'm assuming that it's a lost cause. Sad too because one of their later bios updates specifically addresses video card compatibility. I'm guessing it's a UEFI compatibility issue with the 1060 I'm trying to use in the Shuttle. I have a 1050Ti from a different brand I might try using that just to see.
 
I took a peek at the online manual (dated 2011-08-25) for your model and the BIOS Write Protect option is there under the Boot tab. So unless you are mistaken on your model number, you've got a BIOS version that doesn't quite line up with their manual. Looking down through all the BIOS versions available, they are all dated well after the manual's.

Not that the manual is law or anything. It does beg the question how you ended up with such a limited BIOS.

There's probably a workaround to the write-protect, but I'd exhaust official channels first before going down that dark path. Hopefully you'll get some kind of response from Shuttle.

Edit: Out of curiosity, what specifically is the issue with your 1060 and this model?

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but it hangs on boot when I put the 1060 in there. The bios revision after mine says that it fixed issues with "QUADOR" cards (I'm assuming Quadro), so I have a feeling there was some sort of Nvidia issue with newish cards. I have an old GTX 460 that boots fine. If I were to guess (just a guess) it was an issue with a UEFI GPU not liking an old bios.

My problem was that the windows flash utility kept telling me that the bios was write protected . So just now I loaded the latest bios onto a bootable USB FreeDOS stick and flashed it via DOS. Turns out it worked and now my 1060 seems to not hang on boot anymore. Go figure. I read the same manual that you did and looked all over for the write protect flag in bios somewhere, but it wasn't there in my version. That pic I put up a picture of where it "should" be.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks. I've used Windows flash utilities before (OEMs, Gigabyte, Asus, etc.) and never had a problem. No worries though. I'm posting this from a fresh install of Windows on the Shuttle.
