Philips BDM4065UC - 40" 4K 60Hz monitor thread

Hello

I have one of these monitors, have had it for a few years now.
I have noticed some dark spots near the center of the screen lately on bright scenes, may have always been there but it's either becoming more noticeable or maybe I just noticed and I will never be able to sop noticing them

Is there any way to fix this that you're aware of?
Or is it just a result of the huge screen size and the lightning method employed.
Thanks for your comments!

Darn...

Is it common? is it the backlight or what? any ideas?

Did you ever resolve this? I just noticed something similar with mine. The top portion of the monitor is darker than the bottom. I think the backlight may have gone on it. That's some shitty quality control from philips. Monitor's 2 years old :/

Edit: turns out monitors have a 48 month warranty! will check with their support see if I can get this bad boy fixed up.

Just a quick update from a happy user. I bought my BDM4065UC late March 2015 and have had no issues what so ever. I use it most days with my PC, as a TV(USB tuner on the PC) and it have also seen heavy console usage.

I did make one modification as I found the Power LED to bright, so I glued a piece of semi-transparent plastic over the light to dim it. As I used just a glue stick for paper I expected having to redo the mod, but so far the small plastic bit sticks fine and it has dimmed LED sufficiently without my mod looking ungainly.

I've come to rate this monitor as one of my best ever computer buys. Unfortunately it does not have HDMI 2.0 so I am now looking for a replacement since that has become a need to have thing for me, but otherwise the monitor it self is perfect as were it new and not almost 3½ years old.

I use the LG 43" 4k 60Hz TV as a monitor on my two main systems (both comps connected to one TV) and it has HDMI 2.0 and works fine. I'm very pleased with it. I was on the Seiki deal way back in 2013 when they were first released and I used them for years (I still have the original Seiki 50" in the living room) but this 43" LG has been great .

If you're looking to replace the Phillips definitely take a look at the LG 43"

Noted. Thank you for the input. I feel a time of researching coming up :)

Another option would be the Dell P4317Q. With that being said, I think that the LG is probably less expensive and may have a higher PWM frequency post-firmware update (not 100% sure on that as I haven't closely followed the Dell), but I thought I'd mention it as it's in a similar class.

Of course, if you feel like rolling the dice there are the Korean options too (Wasabi Mango, etc.) which some people have had great luck with. Also, Philips has a new(ish) 43" monitor that replaced the BDM4065UC that you might look into. And in addition to these monitors, the options for 4K TVs have improved within the past few years (particularly in terms of input lag) and will of course have HDMI 2.0 as well.

Good luck! :)

For those who own this Monitor, if your tablet has a USB C connector, is there any port on this monitor that can communicate w/ USB C? and what adapter do you buy?

I haven't done the USB C think, but you should be able to use a USB C to DisplayPort adapter. The monitor doesn't have any special provisions for USB C.

Hi Guys,

I have this monitor, I was wondering do you guys play pc games at 1440p or 1080p on this screen? I know not many GPU's can handle smooth gameplay in 4k, was wondering will it look ok in 1440p or will it look out of proportion?

Hi,

Generally I play in full 4K, but some, especially older, games doesn't support that so at times I do use other resolutions and it has been without issues.

The 1440p you mention is a 16:9 aspect ration so proportions fit with the physical size of the monitor* meaning it will be all good. Worth nothing is the 1440 is not a number that fits well with the 2160 of 4K, meaning it isn't like 1/2 or 1/4 so it may be less clear than otherwise only from experience you may not even notice. If you alternatively you can put the monitor in 1:1 mode and it wont stretch the imagine to full size and instead maintain 1 physical pixel per image pixel.

*In actuality the monitor is not perfectly 16:9, but it close enough - something I think was debate somewhere way back in this thread.

Thanks for the info.

I am thinking of getting a alienware ultrawide 34" gsync monitor :) 3440X1440 120Hz. But not sure if I will get used to ultrawide and curve??

Interesting prospect. I have heard some people have tried, hated it and found them self having to get rid of their purchase but others love it.

You can emulate the ultra wide experience with the Philips, set the game resolution to say 3840x1440 or 3440x1440, the monitor in 1:1 mode and you'll have black bars above and below the image and with the high contrast ration of the Philips the black parts will almost disappear. It should give you a good idea on the experience of ultra wide (and as it is less pixels you GPU will be less stressed).

While I can see the attraction of the 120 Hz I think that Alienware would be a step down in all other aspects, it will of course work well for ultra wide gaming and the movies in that format, bit otherwise it is just not a format best suited for anything as having more pixels vertically is an advantage for most things + the contrast ratio on the Philips is good enough one can emulate ultra wide pretty well.

And the curve thing. In an ideal wold all monitors should be able to curve on demand, like this:

However since that isn't happening so when having to chose flat or curve display the later is just more flexible so it wins - for me :)

Thanks. I will try and emulate the ultra wide gaming on my Philips :) will see how it goes.

for those who still own this monitor, is it still working fine for you? because just now, I notice the top portion of my display is darker. Does that mean the LCD light is dying?

and is it true this unit is 4 yr. warranty?

I am happily using mine pretty much every day with no issues at all, so that is less than three months from 5 years of use. I have looked for a replacement as I would like to have HDMI 2.0, but have not been able to find one that ticks all the boxes.

From your description it sounds to me as some of the back-lighting has gone on yours, no idea if something like that is fixable or not. As for warranty as I recall it was three years, but I can't really say I gave it much thought. Regardless I think you should check with Philips in your country to learn what warranty was included, since chances are it could different.

I find out in North America, it's 4 yr., so my extended warranty from Mastercard covers it. I can't find a link from the search engine as to how much it will cost to replace the backlight, it looks like it's cheaper to replace it

Bought my monitor in 2015, and it's still going well, but I have noticed it is slightly darker at the top - perhaps in the top 1/8th of the screen? Also, it flickers faintly in that same area when it comes out of sleep mode, but that goes away after around 5 minutes. It's not enough to make me dislike it though, I still think it's a superb screen. However, I will probably replace it with something faster and with HDR later this year/next year, depending on whether something good enough comes out.

Regarding the warranty, try contacting Philips direct - I have heard good stories about replacements from other people who own this model.

I also own this monitor and just started having the issue where there are dark areas across the screen. Very disappointing. UPDATE: Today my screen started getting darker and then all at once went completly dark. My expensive four year old 4k monitor is dead.

how many months has it gone dark? and the darkness is consistent?

how many months since it first happens?

it's 4 yr. warranty, so you check if it's still under the 4 yr.

I bought mine in November of 2015 so it's out of warranty. I did contact Phillips and they had me send them the photo I posted above, as well as a description of the issue, and proof of purchase. We will see what they can do for me.

1) Where is the authorized service center in North America?

2) this is a disappointment, what's our game plan if Philip won't do warranty repair? is it worth worth at all to repair and what's the cost ?

3) Is there anyone who repair backlight failure and how long does it last? <-- I'll post a separate thread in general

Please let us know how you get on.

I don't have serious issues with my screen, like I said it's a minor flicker when I first turn it on then it's fine. But I'm interested to know how they'll respond outside of the warranty period.

To be honest, I'm more interested in upgrading the screen but I can't find anything worth upgrading to, yet!

They emailed me back and this is what they said. By the way, I called my credit card company and they extend my warranty by 12 months past the factory warranty. So I may pursue the repair option.

"The 4 years warranty on the monitor has expired. If you want to explore out of warranty repair options we have a service center in Lawrenceville, GA. You will need to send the monitor to them for diagnosis and quotations. Let us know if you want to proceed with that option and we will give you their contact information."

UPDATE: I decided against shipping my monitor out to get fixed. As it turns out my credit card company will only extent the manufacturers warranty if their warranty is three years or less.....the Phillips warranty is four years. So, I decided to open it up and see what was going on. Obviously I knew it was a back lighting issue since it went completely blank. You really have to do some digging to get to the back lighting strips. When I got there, over half of them looked brown and burnt. The strips themselves would be super easy to replace. They just have basic screws holding them down and they plug/unplug quite easily. Looking at my photos you can easily see the burned out areas. I don't know if the strips could be replaced and it would work fine, or if something upstream has malfunctioned and cause the issue.

I use Chase for my different CC. I have no idea where you would order parts....maybe directly from Phillips? I have abandoned this monitor, and in my opinion Phillips failed miserably. I will not purchase one of their monitors ever again. For the price they charged this should have lasted way longer than four years. I even told them that but they said there was nothing they could do but give me a quote on repair. Well here's what I'm going to do Phillips.....speak with my wallet and never buy your products again, and make sure I tell everyone I know about what I consider a premature failure.

By the way....there's only two small circuit boards, and several rows of back light strips in this monitor. Way over priced for what we got.

Just like you, my screen got darker yesterday afternoon, and as of tonight, it's totally dead. I have seen 99% of other brand name LCD screens that last well over 10+ years. The only bad one besides this brand is Samsung. Definitely a disappointing result. Philips tech. support has told me fixing it is not worth while as the technician time to diagnosis and replace / repair parts will cost more than buying a new one. They actually think I'll buy a new one from them again. I won't use one if it were free

I ended up buying a new LG 43" monitor. I'm extremely happy with the purchase. I have one of their flat screen TV's hanging on my wall that I have never had any issues with. I will never buy another Phillips brand monitor.

Which model? Is it the one with the VERY tiny Freesync range?

And my 43" Viewsonic 4K VX-4380 also just arrived this afternoon. I am also very happy w/ this model so far. Just the fact that I don't have to see the graphics all mess up the way philips boot up, is priceless

That was the most annoying thing about the Phillips monitor.....that constant handshake issue at boot up. Sometimes I just wanted to check something really quick on my PC. But nooooo...I had to wait for the damn monitor to sort out its display.
