I am a college student living in the dorms and we only have two ethernet ports per room. A desktop computer hooked up to our internet gets very good connection - something like 65mb down, 30up, and 6ms ping - while wireless connections and xboxs are very limited - more like 1 mb down 1mb up and 75 ping. To avoid this, my roommate and i run our internet through his computer (his computer has 2 ethernet ports), then out into a wireless router of our own that we hook up our xbox's and laptops to. The problem is that windows is only giving the router around 10% of the internet connection so it is still pretty slow. Is there any way to fix this and allow the router devices more like 50% (or at least good ping for the xboxs)?

Have you asked your college campus's network administration group for help in getting more ethernet ports in your room or (as an alternative) using a wireless access point?

What's wrong with connecting the router directly to the wall ethernet port, then to the PC and other devices?

sorry, i guess i should have clarified that the school provides its own wireless, and your technically not supposed to have your own hooked up... hooking a router or switch up to the provided jacks does not work, not to mention even if i hook my xbox directly up to the wall, it is much slower because it puts it on the "game" network instead of the wired desktop network which is much faster.

this sounds like a case of, hey the networks admins put in all this equipment to stop people like you from doing what your doing, and your asking on how to get around it..

There is an easy fix for this. They have port security enabled which doesn't allow you to just hook a switch right up to the wall. However what you can do is hook your router up and register the MAC address of the WAN port as a normal PC. Then hook up the rest of your network behind it. This is what I did and what many of my friends are still doing at RIT and it works flawlessly. For the wireless just turn it off, or don't broadcast an SSID.

Typically schools do this for a reason... C7J0yc3 is right, either get a plain router and register that or disable WiFi on a Wireless router. Pissing off the network staff could get you in a sticky situation.

Yes, i realize they do it for a reason, and im not too worried about getting caught since the punishment here is just that they take away your router/switch until the end of the semester, something i am more than willing to deal with. I'll try registering my switch and see how that works

A switch will not work, it has to be a router or similar gateway device.

if they are QoS'ing xbox traffic (which is pretty simple to do), you arent going to get around it with any switch or router. you would have to encapsulate the xbox traffic in some type of container that the schools firewall doesnt flag for traffic shaping.

im not going to tell you how because its not your network and you do not have permission to do this. the official punishment might be removal of your switch, but ive seen college network guys do some interesting "unofficial" things to people who skirt network rules. generally its not a good idea to piss these people off intentionally. do you enjoy surfing the net at 56k for a whole semester?

another suggestion- that personal wireless router you have- you are liable for everything passing thru it. all the traffic that passes thru it will appear to be coming from your computer, regardless of who is connected. if a virus gets into the school network and its traced back to your illegal wireless router, you will be liable for damages. if it causes $100k worth of damage, it will be added to your bill. if you leave it open for everyone to use, you are entirely liable for every single person who uses it. i would highly suggest getting rid of that.

At my first school we were all surfing at 56k, if that. I don't know it was incompetency on the part of the staff or they just didn't see it as a priority that the internet in the residence halls was all but unusable. Of course the semester I left they got it sorted out.

We weren't supposed to have our own routers either but I did. I secured it and disabled ssid broadcast.
