Why I Walked Out On Apple

And people wonder why I quit where I was and make considerably less now working for myself. Meat puppet middle management, being squeezed on hours and "dedication" to some corporate entity and their bottom line are enough to make me puke when you look at how well people are being "taken care" of...

Anybody here using any linux distro?

Responses like this I why I don't tell anyone to use Linux anymore unless they actually are capable of researching what they need, and what they are willing to do to use Linux. The guys/gals who make Wine do it out of the goodness of their heart. They don't charge a red cent for their labors...

Anybody here using any linux distro?

Should have multiquoted but meh. It's pretty game specific. My kids and wife play some WoW, which has a GL client so it runs flawlessly in Wine and if there is a difference between the DX version in speed I can't tell. This assumes your running a vendor driver. My kids desktop pulls slightly...

Anybody here using any linux distro?

This really depends. On my old kick around Thinkpad t61 it's as good if not better than on windows 7. Of course Thinkpads as a whole play really well with Linux down to the fingerprint readers etc. It's hit or miss on most brands (dells do pretty well usually) but I can say my rMBP does much...

Anybody here using any linux distro?

I used to be the biggest Linux advocate in the world. I use it pretty much full time at work and at home. My kids use it and have since I let them on the computer. I generally run the latest Ubuntu LTS, or Arch depending on my mood. Gaming really isn't a problem because Wine is really, really...

Time to retire rig in sig. New build for $700ish..

I don't "need" an i7, no. I have been on this Phenom for years (that and the RAM in this system I actually bought off this forum). I am at a loss as to what difference the extra cache and HT would make in my use. I'll assume video encoding would be my only task that could really benefit from the...

Time to retire rig in sig. New build for $700ish..

A couple updates. Was following a couple links and picked up my PSU. Grabbed a Corsair CXM430 for the ridicules $29.99 after rebate price. It's a known good performing PSU so that's cleared up. Here is a build I tossed together to give people an idea what I am thinking and if it's on the right...

Time to retire rig in sig. New build for $700ish..

Honestly while I appreciate the input that GPU is way, way more than I need or can likely afford. I do have room for 2 slot cards in the case, and plenty of length. I honestly don't game much anymore. I alternate between Star Trek online, some EVE, some skyrim and some Lord of The Rings...

    1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc Coding, web browsing, some gaming 2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? $700 ish. Some flexibility in this. 3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if...

Which Distro to learn linux for IT career

Sorry about the lack of reply, you edited while I was responding. I think you make a fair enough point, but at the same time what you're saying is not jiving with what you're saying other should do. Everyone knows its poor application, bad code or hardware failures that bring systems down. It's...

    I'm done with windows

Pretty much this. I've never had a problem since 7 with stability in windows. On pretty much any type of machine. Spot on. Obviously there will be certain cases, but as a whole MS does a pretty amazing job getting things to work across a myriad of machines and almost countless applications.

Cool story bro. Do you have a point? Honestly I am dying to hear how many times knowledge of whatever vague init system your referring to has saved the day.

Which Distro to learn linux for IT career

Not really. If it crashes over and over again 99% of the time its an application or a hardware problem. Hardware I can fix easy enough, assuming I have the parts to replace. If it's an app though, well there are so many variables I'd hate to speculate. Chances are better than nothing you have...

Which Distro to learn linux for IT career

Whatever you do don't follow this advice. For the love of god don't waste your time learning init (system D or upstart if you really need to know this crap) or any of that under the hood crap that is time wasting at it's finest. Know what happens in the real world when your Linux server crashes...

Which Distro to learn linux for IT career

CentOS and Debian and spend some time on a Ubuntu LTS machine. In that order. If you're looking into a job doing Linux just forget Gentoo/Arch and all the others. No one, let me repeat no one, is going to use a rolling release like Gentoo in a professional environment. I do Linux for a living...

    I'm done with windows

Good luck on a Gentoo based Linux system. While I think 95% of what makes Gentoo special is a waste of time, any time someone switches to Linux it's usually a good thing. I'd take a look at Arch while you're at it if your open to maintaining a rolling OS. While Pacman isn't quite as elegant as a...

MacRumors Forum Hacked, 900K Accounts Compromised

The question is why would anyone want the [H] passwords? We're an insufferable group of hardware snobs, trolls and generally vulgar assholes. And we love it. Hacking our passwords would be a time waster as we're not going to be butthurt. MacRumors on the other hand....

What is your opinion on Windows 8.1

I've come full circle on Windows 8 and have been using it as a daily driver (as much as I can given my work) for the better part of a month now. I like it. I could care less about the start button now that I am used to not having it (coming from Unity or Gnome3 made this really easy for me) and...

Windows "Blue" Is Now Windows 8.1 And It's Free

^^ pretty much this. I can't forsee any issues with 7 till 2020 at the earliest a decent IT program is going to have. It's not like your dependent upon any inherent benefits of 8 or 7 for that matter. And I seriously doubt third party support dries up in 2015, in fact I'd bet the house against...

Ubuntu 13.10 May Ditch Firefox for Chromium

Well Ubuntu at least is pretty slim for an install iso 12.04 still fits on a single CD. They are finally just now getting to the 1gb area for an iso. Plus if you've never installed it, they have worked really hard to get the install to a dead simple process with minimal input needed. I guess I'd...

Windows "Blue" Is Now Windows 8.1 And It's Free

Yeah, and when is the EOL for win7? Are you really that shortsighted you'd buy something now, regardless of quality, because of win7 EOL in 2020? There is zero rush except to move off of XP. Either MS straightens out 8 for enterprise (not likely) or they sell win7 licenses. Your concern for win7...

Windows "Blue" Is Now Windows 8.1 And It's Free

Why bother? Enterprise isn't going to even sniff around at forming a committee to explore the possible adoption of win8. It's a complete and utter non starter. A metric shit ton of companies still run XP and if/when they move it will be to 7 or something else entirely. This isn't opinion, this...

Google Demands Shut Down of Microsoft's YouTube App

His point is quite simply what it is in every thread that mentions Microsoft. They are the bestest and can do no wrong. What's new? Google Demands Shut Down of Microsoft's YouTube App

The real problem is going to be the content providers who will only let videos on with ads in place. It bugs the shit out of me I can watch a video on my laptop but can't on my phone, and I am smart enough to not blame google for this. It's the providers who pick and choose how you can watch...

what os would you replace windows with?

Nothing to do with the File system and how it writes/accesses your disk. Gotcha. Real security is a multilayered approach. Removing the ability to put dirty software on your computer is one step. Why is this so hard to understand or even a point of contention? Fact is most exploits for...

what os would you replace windows with?

No HDD's do not need to be defragged. Why would you think they need to be? And no it's not totally impervious to malware, but on a desktop you'd actually have to intentionally install it at the least. Linux uses these things called repositories, you pull your packages from them not all over the...

what os would you replace windows with?

Point completely missed. In Linux you don't do any of that automatically, you just don't do it at all. You clearly know as much about Linux as MS does about selling phones. And your kidding yourself thinking the average person will get by just setting up backups. Everyone of my non "tech"...

Windows 8 Market Share Better Than OS X, Worse Than Vista

Microsoft Admits Finding Zero-Day Bug in IE8

By all means stick with the bug ridden filth that is ie8 since you're in a "production environment" that magically relies on XP...and ie8. I'm sure that's not going to cause any problems like the one in the OP. Never.

Or in practical terms double+ the llifetime, with a much wider target audience. Keep trying to make that comparison not look as dumb as it is though, might as well double down on being intellectually dishonest at this point.

Windows 8 Market Share Better Than OS X, Worse Than Vista

They don't need to be interpreted, common sense says your comparison is ridicules on it's face. Get back to me when Steam on Linux approaches the age the travesty of a Win8 store is now and we'll talk.

Windows 8 Market Share Better Than OS X, Worse Than Vista

Unlike most I actually don't mind your Win8 white knight shtick. You could at least attempt to compare apples to apples in your attempts to deride any other OS. Steam was released on Ubuntu in mid feb of this year, or roughly 2 months ago. Those stats you are using as some type of "evidence" are...

Windows 8 Market Share Better Than OS X, Worse Than Vista

I'm really not surprised about these numbers. They aren't good and they aren't really bad. I recently "inherited" a Thinkpad t61 with win 8 on it. Ran it for a couple weeks before plowing it under for an xubuntu install. To be quite honest they could have sold 8 as an upgrade on the enhanced...
